On behalf of Chief and Council and the Miawpukek community, we welcome you to our self-government website.

The ultimate right to self-government is the belief that the Creator has given the Mi'kmaq people the mandate and responsibility to live on this continent. For thousands of years the Mi'kmaq Nation governed themselves. This is self-evident. There was no other option.

Organizational Profile

The Miawpukek First Nation (Conne River) and the Government of Canada, represented by Indian and Northern Affairs (DIAND), are engaged in an innovative pre-negotiations process designed to facilitate movement toward a self-government regime for the community of Conne River.

There is no blueprint for the attainment of self-government. Each community has the responsibility to determine its own needs, conditions, and aspirations. This is our attempt at examining our needs.
